MPhil/PhD in Economics
12 years of regular schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree + post-graduate education leading to an MA/MSc degree in Economics or related specializations from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries with the following minimum eligibility marks criteria:
For candidates from the annual system: 50% and above
For candidates from the semester system (percentage): 55% and above
For candidates from the GPA semester system, the formula for determining percentage is as follows:
Percentage = CGPA obtained X 100 / Maximum GPA obtainable
Such candidates are required to have a minimum of 60% marks or above.
Admission Procedure : will consist of 2 phases. The first phase consists of an Entrance Test and the minimum marks required to clear the Entrance Test will be 25 (out of 50). Those who are short-listed for the second phase will have to submit a written research proposal and face an interview. A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately, in both the written test and the interview, in order to be eligible for admission. The final merit list will be prepared by totalling the marks obtained in both the phases.
Format of the Entrance Test Paper
The duration of the Entrance Test is 3 hours The question paper for the Entrance Test will have two Sections. Section A will contain 25 multiple choice questions carrying 1 mark each and Section B will have long answer questions. Candidates will be required to answer all questions from Section A and 5 questions (out of 10) from Section B, each carrying 5 marks. Questions will be asked from areas covering Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Methods, Statistical & Econometric Methods, and Development Economics.
Negative Marks for Wrong Answers
If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, ¼ of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
Research Proposal: Students who clear the screening test will be asked to submit a short research proposal of not more than 1500 words clearly indicating a research problem along with the methodology they propose to employ. In this respect candidates are advised to refer to the research interests of individual faculty members to identify the broad research expertise available in the faculty.
Interview: The interview will focus on the candidate’s comprehensive understanding of Economics including his/her to elaborate on the research proposal.
50% of the seats are reserved for candidates from India and the other 50% for candidates from SAARC countries other than India, taken together, subject to availability. Separate merit lists will be prepared, one for candidates from India and the other for the SAARC countries combined (except India).
Candidates should note that the final selection will be based on the compatibility of their proposal with the research interests of the faculty members.
