             Workshop on Mapping Indian Ocean Studies: Emerging Research Agenda

             New  Delhi  (31.10.2019)  SAU  DIR  News:  The  Department  of  International  Relations,  Faculty  of  Social
             Sciences,  organized  a  one-day  workshop  on  "Mapping  Indian  Ocean  Studies:  Emerging  Research
             Agenda" on 31October 2019. This was the inaugural workshop of the Maritime South Asia & the Indian
             Ocean research workshop series. The series seeks to realize SAU's endeavour to develop a "regional
                                                            consciousness"  that  facilitates  knowledge
                                                            production  of  "Knowledge  without  Borders."
                                                            Specifically,  the  workshop  series  aims  to  spur  the
                                                            designing  of  interdisciplinary  courses  on  maritime
                                                            challenges facing South Asia, identifying innovative
                                                            research  areas,  and  brainstorming  innovative
                                                            themes for annual international conferences to be
                                                            held  in  partnership  with  other  institutions  in  the
                                                            region. The 31st October workshop sought to take
                                                            stock of the existing scholarship on Maritime South
                                                            Asia and the Indian Ocean and identifying potential
                                                            thrust areas for research and collaboration.

             Dr. Kavita Sharma, former President of SAU delivered the Welcome Address, with Opening Remarks
             made by former Vice President of SAU, Prof. Santosh Panda. Professor Sanjay Chaturvedi, the Convenor
             of the workshop and the Series, provided an Introduction to the Workshop. The workshop included
             keynote presentations by eminent thinkers like Ambassador Yogendra Kumar, Dr. Vijay Sakhuja, Prof. P.V.
             Rao, and Prof. SK Mohanty. In addition, papers on diverse themes like maritime order and connectivity,
             human security and international economic law were presented by Prof. Subramanyam Raju, Dr. Anasua
             Basu Ray Chaudhury, Ms. Ruchita Beri, Mr. Amit Sinha, Ms. Pallavi Arora, and Dr. Prabhash Ranjan. Dr.
             Ranjan had also convened the panel discussion on  International Economic Law and the Blue Economy.
             The concluding roundtable on the future research agenda on Maritime South Asia included presentations
             by all the faculty members of the Department of International Relations.



             Legally Speaking

             New Delhi (13.11.2019) SAU FLS News: Faculty of Legal Studies hosted two professors of Law from the
             University of Dhaka, Bangladesh om 13 November 2019. Dr. Muhammad Ekramul Haque, addressed the
             students and faculty members at FLS on the ‘Justiciability of Constitutional Principles on Economic and
                                                                 Social  Rights  in  Bangladesh  and  India:  A
                                                                 Comparative Analysis’.   This was followed by
                                                                 another  interesting  talk  on  ‘Bangladesh’s
                                                                 Compliance with the WTO TRIPS Agreement::
                                                                 Lessons from Developing SAARC Countries’ by
                                                                 Dr.  Mohammed  Towhidul  Islam.    His  talk
                                                                 mapped  the  experiences  of  the  SAARC
                                                                 countries  with  regard  to  their  national
                                                                 responsibilities  under  the  TRIPS  Agreement
                                                                 and how Bangladesh could benefit from such
                                                                 experiences.  The  talks  were  chaired  by  Dr.
                                                                 Ravindra  Pratap  and  Dr.  Nafees  Ahmad,  FLS,
                                                                 SAU.
