Course Overview

This course delves into the vibrant and varied musical traditions of South Asia. Students will explore the historical, cultural, and social contexts of music from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan.

The curriculum spans traditional and contemporary music forms, iconic instruments, and fusion styles that highlight the evolving nature of South Asian music.

Eligibility

A candidate must have passed class 12 or higher secondary or any equivalent qualifying examination.

This course is open to all music enthusiasts, professionals, and students interested in vocal music and South Asian singing traditions.

3 Months – 40 Hours

Fee Structure

Course Fee: USD 120 / INR 10,440

Scholarships:

  • 50% for current SAU students
  • 25% for SAU Alumni
  • 25% for Teachers from SAARC Countries

Installment Option: Students may pay the fee in two installments of USD 70. An additional USD 20 registration fee applies (Total USD 140).

INTRODUCTION: 2 HOURS

  • Student-Teacher Exchange: Aspirational Action Plan

MODULE 1 – 8 HOURS: FOUNDATION OF SOUTH ASIAN MUSIC

  • Overview of South Asia’s cultural diversity and its influence on music
  • Music as a cultural artifact: key forms and traditions
  • Foundational concepts: Raga, Tala
  • Demonstrations:
    • Presentation of instruments: Sitar, Tabla, Harmonium, etc.
    • Sound identification and classification
    • Demonstrating unique techniques and sound profiles

MODULE 2 – 10 HOURS: EXPLORING CLASSICAL AND FOLK TRADITIONS

  • Hindustani vs Carnatic traditions
  • Pakistan: Qawwali and Sufi music
  • Bangladesh: Baul and Bhatiyali
  • Nepal: Himalayan folk music
  • Sri Lanka & Bhutan: Buddhist chants
  • Afghanistan: Pashto & Persian influence
  • Listening Sessions: Semi-classical & folk recordings

MODULE 3 – 10 HOURS: POPULAR AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC TRENDS

  • Film music in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh
  • Bollywood’s global musical impact
  • Fusion genres (e.g., Coke Studio)
  • Growth of pop, rock, and indie scenes
  • Interactive Activities:
    • Song Analysis: Iconic film tracks
    • Group Project: Curate a South Asian music playlist

MODULE 4 – 7 HOURS: CROSS-CULTURAL INFLUENCE AND FUSION

  • Global influence of South Asian diaspora
  • Ravi Shankar, George Harrison collaborations
  • Role of festivals and global stages
  • Workshop: Create a fusion composition

VALEDICTION: 3 HOURS

  • Theory Examination
  • Practical Presentation
