Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS)


Welcome to the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS)

The Faculty of Social Sciences at South Asian University was initiated in 2011. At present, it consists of the Department of International Relations and the Department of Sociology.

In terms of overall planning, FSS is expected to host the following departments in the future in addition to the two departments that already exist:

  • Department of Political Studies
  • Department of Human Development Studies (Education Studies, Population Studies,Community Health)
  • Department of Public Policy and Governance

Degrees Awarded
  • MA program: FSS at present only offers MA degrees in Sociology and International Relations. Both programs are of two year duration running through four semesters. The MA degrees in Sociology and International Relations are open for students who possess a three or four BA degree or equivalent degree after qualifying at the annual Entrance Examination held in selected cities in South Asia.
  • Direct Ph.D. program: FSS will offer PhD programs from 2014 onwards is meant for students who already possess and MA, MPhil or other degrees equivalent to a master’s degree.
Future Expectations

The final faculty strength of FSS will be around 60 with expertise in the broad areas of the existing and planned departments mentioned above. With these faculty positions in place, FSS expects to admit about 300 PhD students at a given time when PhD programs are established from 2014 onwards. Additionally, about 300 MA students and about 150 post-doctoral researchers, research associates and visiting faculty members would be expected to be based in the Faculty at any given time.
