Faculty of Life Sciences & Biotechnology (FLSB)

Our Vision

The current millennium is the age of biological sciences. Today, we have conceptual, experimental and mathematical tools to understand the complexity of inputs that go into the integrated study of the Science of Life. Also, with changing modes of production and climate change, the role of Life Sciences is increasing rapidly to the extent that our long-term wellbeing would be highly dependent on our understanding of the biological processes. The distinction between basic knowledge and its application towards the betterment of human existence has mostly ceased to exist. The Faculty of Life Sciences and Biotechnology (FLSB) has a broad sweep, so as to offer a well-planned selection of courses that enable flexibility and lateral integration while maintaining the coherence and rigor of specific disciplines. The options include basic areas of study as well as those geared towards our practical needs in agriculture, health and industry. In research, the Faculty encourages complete academic freedom and collaboration with other Faculties. It strives for originality and innovation that gives it a prominent place in the web of science and also lends it international visibility and connectivity.

What We Offer

FLSB trains postgraduate students in a wide spectrum of Biotechnology. The endeavor of the Faculty is to teach the latest concepts and research technologies and prepare the students for careers in research and teaching in modern biology and biotechnology. The areas covered includes Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Medicine, Genetic Engineering, Plant Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Cancer Biology, Environmental Biotechnology, Stem cell Biology, Fermentation and Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Biology, Virology, Structural Biology, Synthetic Biology and Host-Pathogen Interactions. In addition, a major component of our curriculum is Laboratory Techniques, Research Methodology and Research Project.

Degrees Being Awarded

  • M.Sc. (Biotechnology) – 2 years program with one semester of project work for students who possess bachelor’s degrees in different fields of science.
  • Ph.D. (Biotechnology) – 5 years program for students who possess M.Sc./M.Tech degrees.

Our Strength

The faculties have been appointed from various international research institutions with specific research experiences in different fields of Biotechnology. All faculty members, irrespective of their positions, are expected to actively participate in the teaching programs, mentoring the students, and research projects. Each faculty member offers  fundamental / core courses as well as specialized courses in their respective areas of teaching and research interest. They are also actively involved in teaching the laboratory hands-on training for the Masters students.

The Masters’ students while attending theory classes in the morning, they spend 16 hours per week in the M.Sc. laboratory performing hands-on laboratory techniques in the first two semesters. During the third semester, they undergo Research methodology training along with optional specialized theory courses and in fourth semester, they conduct full time research in the form of project work. Once a student takes admission to FLSB, they are assigned Academic Mentors from amongst the faculty members.  We also have in place a student-faculty committee (SFC) which meets regularly to discuss academic issues and problems faced by the students and help them in overcoming them.  For each Ph.D. student there is a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) for monitoring the research progress.  FLSB also organizes regular seminars, workshops, poster presentations, conferences, and various expert talks by the faculties from other academic institutions.

Facilities Available

Classrooms: Our classrooms are fully air-conditioned with a capacity to accommodate 60 students per class. In addition, we have the best quality of smart boards installed in all the classrooms.

M.Sc. laboratory: A fully equipped, air-conditioned, and state-of-the art facilities are available for conducting M.Sc. laboratory technology courses in the 1st and 2nd semesters. A dedicated team of the laboratory technicians and lab attendants are fully available to help in conducting practical in the M.Sc. lab.

Research laboratories: Individual faculty members have their own Research Labs which provide sufficient work space to accommodate the students. These labs are equipped with basic and advanced instruments  required for the research work. In addition, we have Central Instrumentation facility and common research facilities for the students.

Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF): CIF houses many state-of-the-art equipment including PCR and Real Time PCR machine, 2D Gel Electrophoresis, Gel documentation system, Flow Cytometer, Direct and Inverted Microscope, Fluorescent Microscopes, Stereo-zoom Microscope, High Speed and Ultracentrifuges, HPLC, Phosphorimager, FPLC, Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector, FACS Aria, Confocal Microscope, Biosafety Hoods and Apotome. Apart from this, we have established specialized facilities for Mammalian cell culture, Drosophila culture, Cell- Imaging, Plant growth and tissue culture, and a small Animal House facility (SAF).

Campus Life:  The campus is located in South-West Delhi in approximately 100 acres in Maidan Garhi, next to Jasola wild life sanctuary. It is a green campus with ample space for walking, cycling and playgrounds. The campus provides a healthy living and better environment for various extra-curricular activities. FLSB students actively participate in the inter- and intra-departmental extra-curricular activities such sports, art & design, cultural programs, debates, presentations, stage performances, and many more. For the holistic well-being of our students, the campus has a Medical Facility with a medical doctor, nurse and a medical counsellor available for the consultations.
