Dr. Sabah
Hussain is an Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations,
Faculty of International Studies, South Asian University, New Delhi. She holds
a Ph.D. in Political Science from Jamia Millia Islamia, and undertook research
training at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 2023, under Professor
Molly Andrews of University College London. She previously served as Faculty in
the Department of Political Science, Lady Shri Ram College, University of
Delhi, and at the Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion, Jamia Millia
Islamia. At these institutions, she taught postgraduate and undergraduate
courses on the Indian Constitution; Debates on Citizenship; Inclusion, Social
Justice and Legislation; and Research Methodology, Ethnography and Theories of
International Relations, and supervised Master's dissertations
Grounded in
feminist, post-colonial, and critical research theorisations, her research and
teaching interests bring together political theory, political economy,
identity, political behaviour and the politics of cinema and visual culture
within the broader field of South Asian politics. Her work examines the
discursive construction of citizenship and constitutionalism in contemporary
India, alongside questions of legal subjectivity, embodied and spatial
politics, and civic engagement with governance, community, and the everyday
state. She draws on intersectionality, standpoint theory, discursive
institutionalism, and governmentality to analyse gendered agency and mobility,
and the politics of the private sphere, within socio-political and economic
structures.
Her research
has appeared in Feminist Legal Studies (Springer, Scopus-indexed) and The
Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies and Development (Arcadia
University and the American Graduate School in Paris, France), alongside review
essays and critical reviews in the Journal of International Women’s Studies
(Bridgewater State University, Massachusetts, USA), Asian Women (Research
Institute of Asian Women, Seoul, Republic of Korea), Social Action (Indian
Social Institute, New Delhi, India), and The Book Review (The Book Review
Literary Trust, New Delhi, India), among others.
She has
presented her research at several international academic institutions,
including King’s College London (London, UK); Carleton University (Ottawa,
Canada); and the American Graduate School in Paris, in partnership with Arcadia
University (Paris, France), among others. She has also had her research papers
selected for presentation at international conferences hosted by institutions
including Leuphana University of Lüneburg (Germany); Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki (Greece); Jagiellonian University (Poland); the India Ireland
Studies Centre (Ireland); Istanbul University (Türkiye); and Universidad de la
Ciudad de México (Mexico), as well as at the World Congress of the
International Political Science Association (IPSA), Seoul, South Korea.
She has
participated in international workshops organised by institutions and
organisations including the ECPR Methods School (Belgium); the University of
Calicut; the UGC Human Resource Development Centre; the
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung; Aligarh Muslim University; Pondicherry University;
and the French Institute of Pondicherry.
She is an
active member of multiple European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR)
Standing Groups and Research Networks, spanning Citizenship, Comparative
Political Institutions, Policy Analysis, Critical Peace and Conflict Studies,
Affective Polarisation, (Anti-)Corruption and Integrity, Digital
Authoritarianism, Autocracies and Global Governance, the Political Theory of
Elections, and the Sciences of the Democracies.
